I repainted this old O gauge live steam locomotive to a black London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) scheme - lined like the real engine was early in WWII. I also repainted and modified a modern Lionel tender so I can run any of my vintage or new Lionel coarse scale 32 mm gauge toy train cars with it.
In this video I run four trains, all with the same engine:
- Passenger train with three Bing carriages made in Germany, likely in the 1920s. Very sadly, Bing was confiscated by the Nazis in the 1930s because the owner was Jewish. A number of great, leading and innovative German toy makers ended tragically because of this.
- Passenger train with uncommon American Flyer “Dominion Flyer” Canadian National Railways carriages from the 1920s. I have to thank my cousin Dan for giving me these wonderful cars. In the 1920s Canada was officially The Dominion of Canada. It was this named because it was a self-ruling dominion within the British Empire. Cousin Dan is a train nut and models HO. Sometimes people give him old trains they don’t know what to do with. I have been the occasional lucky beneficiary. Sharing around benefits the hobby.
- Pipe load flatcar train. The flatcars are stamped steel and were designed before United States manufacturing re-tooled for war production. During WWII Lionel made towed ship logs, binnacles, cartridge tracks for anti-aircraft guns (a good fit as they already knew a thing or two about track!) and more for the Navy. When they appeared after the war (late 1940s) they were equipped with the then brand new truck and knuckle coupler design.
- The ubiquitous break down train complete with Lionel Bucyrus-Erie crane, which is fully functional by hand cranks and the work car that accompanies it. These came from a 1950s train set lead by a powered and dummy Alco diesel set painted in Missouri Pacific livery. I have the complete original train set thanks to Guy in Quebec. He is a friend of my father in law and has a nice HO layout. Someone gave him the O gauge set and he didn’t know what to do with it so gave it to me. Train friends are the best!
Happy model railroading in any scale and gauge combination, antique or new.
Terry
