"Everything was destroyed; the rooves were blown off, and the whole yard was destroyed. I grabbed my documents and took my granddaughter, who has a disability," Nadiia Andriivna, from Siversk in eastern Ukraine, describes how she fled her town because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Nadiia fled to Artyliarschyna in Poltava Oblast, where she, her granddaughter, and others found refuge in a collective centre in a primary school. The locals were very welcoming, but the school was ill-prepared to accommodate people during winter. "There was an existing heating system, but it only worked on the first floor. When the institution accepted displaced people, and the number of people increased, it became urgent to reconstruct the heating system by introducing a heating network throughout the whole building," says Oleksandr Mindio, Construction Engineer from People in Need.
Thanks to People in Need and funding from European Union, displaced people can keep warm during cold winter months.
