While oil spills have become less of a problem over time, the reality is that there are still 150,000 tons of crude oil deposited unintentionally into our oceans every year. That’s more than 65 Olympic swimming pools full of oil. This causes disastrous environmental and economic impacts. ICEYE’s synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system is particularly suited to mitigating the effects of oil spills. Our radar sensor in space is excellent at detecting the difference between oil and water in large open bodies of water like lakes or oceans. And our satellites can collect imagery over large swaths of open ocean very frequently, almost on an hourly basis. ICEYE’s technology provides nations with capabilities they’ve never had before. And this use case is a perfect example of how our technology and our products align to solve a major pain point for our customers.
