Istanbul's Taksim Square was calm on Tuesday morning, but there was still a heavy police presence just days after violence on the streets. Several hundred union members marched to show solidarity with anti-government demonstrators on Monday.
Recent protests, some of them violent, have presented Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan with the greatest public challenge to his ten-year leadership.
After the union members were prevented from entering Taksim Square, other protesters - mainly young people - moved in and clashed with police.
In Taksim on Tuesday, one woman said she didn't agree with the government's approach.
"They call the protesters provocateurs, but I think the government and the Prime Minister are the biggest provocateurs," she said.
"They don't see these people, they don't understand, they don't want to see what these people are looking for."
In Taksim Square, on Tuesday morning, a young couple could also be seen standing in silent protest, following the example of one man who carried out an eight-hour silent vigil.
The silent protests were in stark contrast to demonstrations at the weekend, which saw some of the fiercest clashes so far when police fired teargas and water cannon to clear thousands from the area. Report by Mark Morris.
