The Government Accounting and Finance Statistics Center (GAFSC) of Korea Institute of Public Finance (KIPF) is annually organizing the KIPF Public Sector Accrual Accounting International Sympoium with the aim to promote the achievements of accrual accounting system and initiate discussion on the current issues.
Transitioning to accrual is a global trend and countries with advanced accrual system took a step further to use the accrual information in the fiscal management. Korea is not an exception that since the implementation of accrual accounting in 2010, there has been a continuous research effort to utilize the system in the fiscal management.
Hereupon, by forming global network, the GAFSC started to hold the international symposium to provide a consistent opportunity to share the current issues and research results in accrual system.
『The KIPF Public Sector Accrual Accounting International Symposium』 is based on the international cooperative research project of the GAFSC and the event takes place in November each year to ensure its consistency.
The 1st symposium in November, 2020, addressed the case studies of Korea, Switzerland, France and Japan on the “Provision for Pension” which is one of the most pressing issues in accrual accounting. In the following year in 2021, the 2nd symposium initiated the meaning discussion on the ‘role of accrual information in fiscal management’ by presenting the 7 country cases.
The goal of the annual symposium is to promote sustainable development of government accounting and it will be achieved by searching for the solutions through various perspectives, and conceptualizing the long-term projects for improvement and turn it into a public deliberation.
Moreover, the international symposium is expected to serve as the venue for the domestic and international practitioners and experts in government accounting to share their research results based on the respective country cases, and discuss practical usage of the accrual system, as well as, its policy improvement.
