The Joy of Capturing Childhood: A Photographer's Tale
Photography: It’s Personal
As a professional photographer, for me, there's real joy in capturing the precious moments of childhood. From the first delicate yawns of a newborn to the exuberant smiles of toddlers and the unique personalities of older children, we witness each child’s journey.
The video you are watching features Thomas and Joshua. They first visited as newborns, then later as little sitters. I’ve included some of their first photographs at the beginning. They returned when they were three, and as you can see, we had a lot of fun with them in the studio. This blog explores the magic of photographing children year after year, offering my insights into why these sessions are not just snapshots, but treasured memories in the making.
The Newborn Stage: Capturing the Beginning
The journey begins for us when we see babies as newborns, typically within the first two weeks of birth. It’s a special moment for me, and I always feel really privileged to be with families at this time. Having a newborn baby is a marvellous moment in a couple's life, and it’s fun to be around them when it happens. It’s like photographing people on their wedding day—it’s quite literally the best day of their lives, and I get to spend it with them. How cool is that!
Growing Up
Newborns return to us as little sitters or toddlers, and we get to see how their personalities are developing. The studio bursts with energy as the children play and interact with us. In this video, you can see how much fun the twins are having, but I think you can also see that their parents, Katherine and John, also me and Georgina, are having a blast too!
Creating a Fun and Comfortable Environment
Our studio at Blitz is designed to create a comfortable and engaging environment for children of all ages. In this video, you can see how we engage and interact with the kids. We understand that a relaxed child is more likely to be themselves, resulting in natural and beautiful portraits. This is not an act. We really enjoy doing this stuff. We can be as childish as the next kids, especially if we get the shots we want.
The Photographer's Perspective
For us, photographing children is not just about creating art; it's about capturing the essence of childhood. It's a privilege to be part of these families' lives, watching children grow and change. Each session is a celebration of life, filled with laughter, tenderness, and sometimes the unpredictability of childhood.
Why Family Photography Matters
Family photography is more than a business for us; it’s a way of life for Georgina and me, and we feel really lucky to be able to do it. The speed at which children grow can feel overwhelming for parents. We know these photographs serve as a pause button, allowing families to hold onto the fleeting moments of their children’s childhood. They are not just pictures; they're a legacy, a storybook of life that families will treasure forever.
It’s a Great Job
Photographing children as they grow is an immensely fulfilling and rewarding experience. It’s a journey filled with smiles, laughter, and sometimes tears, but always love. In our studio, we don't just take photographs; we create memories and document children’s journeys through life. That’s a real thrill, and something we’re grateful to be able to do. I hope this video gives you a sense of what we are trying to achieve and that you will give us the opportunity to spend time with your family.
