According to the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry)’s 2018 Global Music Report which surveyed 70 countries, Malaysia ranks 38th in terms of our total market when compared with the other countries (IFPI, 2018). This shows that our industry is in fact struggling and facing stagnation as compared to the other rapidly expanding music industries namely China, the United States, South Korea and Japan.Yes, this trend has also been recognized in local academic publications which have pointed out the crucial causes of the current chronic decline seen in our music industry. This stems from the fact that most artists only have a short product life cycle and thus could not justify large expenditures dedicated to them at least to the degree that artists in other nations could procure for their productions.
