The families of the victims of the July 2021 unrest who were killed in Phoenix in KwaZulu-Natal say they have still not recovered from the tragic loss they suffered. Some are still waiting for the perpetrators to be arrested.
Thirty-seven people were killed in alleged racially-motivated attacks in Phoenix, bordering Kwamashu, Inanda, and Amaoti, in the north of Durban. This sparked racial tensions between Indian and African residents in these areas. 56 people were arrested at the time.
Currently, five murder cases are before the courts. Vusi Khumalo visited two families and filed this report.
