India’s Ministry of Defence has signed two landmark deals, totaling Rs 2,867 crore, to strengthen its submarine fleet. One contract, worth Rs 877 crore, was signed with France’s Naval Group for the integration of the advanced Electronic Heavy Weight Torpedo (EHWT) on the Kalvari-class submarines. The other, a Rs 1,990 crore deal with Mumbai’s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, focuses on the development and integration of the Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, designed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). These agreements, part of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, will enhance both the firepower and endurance of India’s submarine fleet. The AIP system will allow conventional submarines to remain submerged for longer durations without the need for atmospheric oxygen, while the EHWT will improve the offensive capabilities of the Kalvari-class. Both technologies are key to India’s self-reliance in defense technology and manufacturing.
