South African Springbok player Piwo Nyanda’s ‘In The Spotlight’ session at the 6th FORBES WOMAN AFRICA Leading Women Summit held as a virtual event on March 8 and 9, was about her ascent in the game of rugby.
“During primary school, I wasn’t exposed to any sports, but as a teenager, I started playing netball, excelled at athletics, and got into touch rugby. I met Bokkie, a great coach who guided, inspired, supported and mentored me. He told me I could be the next Bryan Habana, one of South Africa’s most legendary players – even though I had no idea who he was at the time as we didn’t have access to the TV channels where rugby aired,” said Nyanda. Unfortunately, she says, “Stereotypes like ‘rugby is not for women’ still exist.” Nyanda has just now been signed on by Mastercard as their ambassador.
