When it comes to choosing between a 4-string or 5-string bass, many players get caught up in the debate. But the truth is, it doesn’t really matter which one you use—what matters is what you need for the gig or the music you're playing or recording.

The 4-string bass has been the standard for decades, and it works perfectly for a wide variety of genres like rock, funk, blues, and punk. If you’re playing a set of classic tunes or music that doesn’t dip below that low E, a 4-string will do everything you need. Its simplicity and familiar feel make it a go-to choice for many players.

On the other hand, a 5-string bass gives you access to those lower notes with the additional low B string, which can be a game-changer for certain styles. If you're playing modern rock, metal, gospel, or any genre that demands deep, powerful lows, the 5-string might be the better tool for the job. It’s also a great option in the studio when you're looking for a fuller, more versatile range of tones.

Ultimately, your choice should come down to what the music requires. There's no "better" option—just the one that fits the needs of the song or performance. Some bassists even switch between 4-string and 5-string depending on the gig.
