My Parents Defended My Brother's $40k Debt, Tried to Access My Bank Account, and Called Me Selfish for Saying No. Here's How I Fought Back
...............................................
From a young age, I learned that in my family, my brother Jason was always the golden child. No matter how many mistakes he made or how many opportunities he squandered, he could do no wrong. I, on the other hand, was expected to be the responsible one, the one who had her life together. Growing up, I did everything I could to live up to those expectations: I studied hard, found a stable job, and built my life with determination and grit. Meanwhile, Jason floated through his twenties without much thought for the future. He bounced from one half-baked business idea to another, dropped out of college, and constantly found himself in sticky situations, often making poor choices with his finances.
While I was building my career, Jason was failing to make ends meet. Yet, instead of learning from his mistakes, my parents would step in to bail him out each time—whether it was paying off his credit card debt, covering his rent when he was evicted, or loaning him money to start yet another "business" that never took off. Every time, my parents reassured me, "This is the last time, he just needs help getting back on his feet." But I knew better. The help never stopped, and Jason never seemed to learn. Meanwhile, I was always there to pick up the pieces, constantly being praised for being the "responsible" one. At first, I didn't mind—I loved my family, and I thought it was my duty to help. But over the years, I realized my support wasn’t seen as kindness—it was being exploited.
