When it comes to training youth athletes, I recommend a combination of:
✅ Fundamental Movement Patterns (Squat, hinge, push, pull, rotate, etc)
✅ Fun games to make training enjoyable
Too often, coaches are looking for the most advanced drills and techniques that youth athletes just aren’t ready for.
🙅🏻♂️ Jumping right into advanced plyometrics that require coordination that far exceeds the young athlete’s current abilities is a great way to waste training time and cause youth athletes to dislike training.
By contrast, if we can choose simple exercises and progress them consistently youth athletes can learn to enjoy the process of training and build healthy habits that can last a lifetime.
🏋🏽♂️ Weightlifting and plyometrics can be safe and effective for youth athletes so long as we’re choosing appropriate exercises for their current abilities and progressing sensibly.
