"DESERT SHIPS" RUN IN THE GREAT SINAI CAMEL RACE
Thousands of Bedouin tribesmen gathered under a clear blue desert sky in North Sinai, Egypt recently for a major camel racing event. This sport is more popular in Egypt than ever before. It offers a chance for the Sinai nomads to express their love and appreciation for the camel as their best friend and companion in the desert.
The towering "desert ships," as the Bedouin call them, have been bred in the Sinai desert for thousands of years. They are cherished and regarded as animals of nobility and good taste. Camels live up to an average of 20 years and their prime years are the seventh and eighth, which are the best years for racing.
During the period from mid-December until the beginning of March, male camels enjoy an increase in physical energy and so the races are usually held at that time. An international camel race is also to be held in Sinai in late April and most of the Arab countries, as well as the USA and Canada, will be taking part.
