US Army Captain Randolph "R.T." Rotte III discusses with Ken Kraetzer of Sons of the American Legion Radio the 2021 Sandhurst Competition held at the US Military Academy at West Point, the world's premier International academy military skills competition to be held April 16-17th.
Captain Rotte describes the event held annually at USMA since 1967, involves two full days of competition for teams of eleven men and women in full military packs traversing the mountainous terrain of West Point performing various military skills at stations along the route.
This year 44 teams will compete including 25 drawn from the West Point cadet companies who competed in a qualifying event last fall. Academy teams come from Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard and the USMA Prep School. A total of 16 Reserve Officer Training Corp teams representing programs which emerged from regional competitions from around the country.
This year due to Covid19 there will not be the normal guest teams from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the U.K. or teams from other allied countries.
The ROTC teams come from Austin Peay State, BYU, Gonzaga, Embry-Riddle, James Madison, Louisville, Lehigh, Marquette, North Georgia, Oregon State, Saint John's (MN), Slippery Rock, South Florida, Stephen F. Austin State, Texas A&M, and William & Mary.
Captain Rotte is Officer in Charge for Sandhurst in 2021, is a 2012 Graduate of West Point has served in the Infantry branch of the US Army, and is an instructor in the Department of Military Instruction at USMA.
