STORYLINE:
Sotheby's auction house in New York kicked off their autumn art season with a sale of 76 lots of their finest impressionist and modern art, including a Gauguin painting which sold for 39 (m) million US dollars.
The Wednesday evening sale at Sotheby's brought in a total of 269,741,600 US dollars, proving the art market is alive and well.
The Paul Gauguin painting, "Te Poipoi," which is a portrait of a Tahitian woman, was the top lot.
It sold for a final price of 39,241,000 US dollars to a Hong Kong buyer, Joseph Lau.
The sale also included Pablo Picasso's 31-and-a-half inch sculpture of artist Dora Maar - Picasso's muse, model and lover - that Sotheby's describes as the finest sculpture by the artist ever to appear at auction.
The sculpture, "Tete de Femme (Dora Maar)," fetched a final sale price of 29,161,000 US dollars, a record for any Picasso sculpture at auction.
Another top lot was a Franz Marc painting, "Der Wasserfall," which sold for 20,201,000 US dollars.
That price makes the painting a record for any of the artist's works at auction.
One expected highlight from the auction, Van Gogh's "The Fields (Wheat Fields)," failed to reach the minimum asking price and was not sold. It was estimated at between 28 (m) million US dollars and 35 (m) million US dollars.
A drawing, "Self Portrait with Checkered Shirt," by Egon Schiele, surprised many buyers with its sale of 11,353,000 US dollars because it was not expected to reach higher than 6.5 (m) million.
The sale is a record for a work on paper by the artist at auction.
