David Bivin, editor-in-chief of JerusalemPerspective.com, explains that it was necessary for a teacher in first-century Jewish society to exhibit exemplary behavior and personal traits. A teacher trained his disciples by personal example much more than by his lectures. (Actions speak louder than words!) He stamped his disciples with his own character. For his or her part, a disciple's job was to imitate his or her teacher's behavior. We find many references to Jesus' character in the Gospels: he was sensitive to the needs of others, he loved little children, he was merciful, generous, and considerate.
