Follow along with today's easy buttercream lilac flower piping tutorial and learn how to pipe lilacs using a drop flower tip! For this tutorial I am using a Wilton 224 drop flower tip, but these flowers could be done with any drop flower tip. These buttercream lilac flowers are the perfect decoration for spring flower cakes or they can be piped directly onto floral cupcakes. These would make an easy decoration for a last minute cake for Mother's Day!
Buttercream Recipe: (Video: [ Ссылка ])
Ingredients
1/2 Cup butter softened to room temperature 113g
2 Cups powdered sugar 200g
1 Teaspoon vanilla extract 4g
1-2 Tablespoons milk 15-30g
Directions:
In a large bowl if using a hand mixer or in the bowl of your stand mixer cream butter on medium low speed for 2-3 minutes or until fluffy and pale in colour. Add 1/2 of the powdered sugar and mix for 2 minutes. Add remaining powdered sugar and mix for another 2 minutes. Your buttercream should be fluffy, pale and thick at this point. Add vanilla and 1 tablespoon of milk. Mix well. If the buttercream is still too thick/stiff add another tablespoon of milk and continue mixing. You will want a medium consistency buttercream to pipe your flowers with! For my lilacs I used a small amount of Wilton gel food colouring in violet. For the leaves I used a small amount of Wilton gel colouring in leaf green.
Buttercream lilac piping instructions:
Begin by attaching a square of parchment paper to a piping nail. Using your coupler or a large round tip pipe a base for your lilac flower. The size and shape of the base will determine the size of the finished lilac flowers. Using your drop flower tip (mine is a Wilton 224) begin piping flowers at the tapered end of the base. To pipe each lilac flower touch the tip to the base, apply pressure and then release before sharply pulling away. Give the tip a small twist and tuck it in the gap between the petals on the previous flower before piping the next to ensure a nice full lilac flower. Continue piping in this manner all the way down to the end of the base, ensuring that the lilac bunch is getting wider toward the bottom. Add a few more flowers to the top, tapering off to form a nice tip. If decorating a cake or transferring these buttercream lilac flowers I recommend that you place the finished flowers in the fridge or freezer for 10-20 minutes to firm up and then transfer them to your cakes. If piping these directly onto cupcakes, I like to add some leaves using a Wilton 352 leaf tip, or by making my own by cutting a V shape into a piping bag. (If you would to see how that is done, check out this leaf piping tutorial : [ Ссылка ]) Add a few leaves to the bottom of your lilac bunches to finish off your flowers!
