(28 Oct 1957) Flood in Valencia - when the water subsided, streets had been turned into mud-swamps. The breaking of the Turia River's banks caused the loss of over sixty lives, with many people missing and five thousand left homeless. Fire fanned by winds of 70 miles an hour, a bush-fire blazed fiercely in a ring round Sydney, New South Wales. People salvaged what they could of their possessions. In one small area nineteen homes were gutted. Nothing left but smouldering ruin.
