Indian authorities have implemented a near-total communications blackout in Jammu and Kashmir, shutting off internet and phone service in the region as the government of India announced plans to change the legal status of the state. Thousands of additional troops have been deployed to the region, where Indian authorities have recently stepped up the arrests of journalists and crackdowns on press outlets.
Communications blackouts have no place in a democracy. India must put an end to this egregious violation of press freedom.
