(5 Sep 1976) Large demonstration in Spain's Basque country in support of amnesty for political prisoners. Besides maintaining their long-standing demands for more autonomy for the Basque region, the demonstrators were seeking amnesty for all political prisoners. An amnesty issued on August 4 by King Juan Carlos freed only a limited number of the scores of Basque guerrillas and militants in jail. Police vehicles, automobiles and some buildings were damaged during the demonstration, and the provincial government said four policemen were injured.
