The United Methodist Church is the second largest protestant denomination in America with almost 5 million members (nationally), but has lost 7,659 of its congregations since 2019 (a quarter of all United States methodist churches). This sizable exodus was the result of disagreements over sexuality and authority in the church. This week at their General Conference, the legislative body of the UMC voted to repeal their forty year ban on LGBTQ+ clergy members. How close was the vote? Not even close at all. It was 93% in favor of the ban (692 to 51). So, just seven percent of the nearly 800 legislative members support the Biblical prescription for sexuality, marriage, and leadership in the church.
