MrTruck and CJ with Transwest Truck Trailer RV North of Denver have more trailer tips and trailer axles and tires. I owned a couple of 35' triple axle trailers on the farm. You could buy 3 axles cheaper than two dual axles. And the DOT would allow more weight on the triple axle trailers vrs 2 dual axles. But triple axles would twist turning corners. The front axle tires would twist one direction and the 3rd axle tires would twist the opposite. This would bend the tire side walls flexing the rubber under a load and occasionally popping the tire bead. It also would loosen up the wheel bearings on front and rear axles. Long ago I was driving a tractor trailer with triple axles on the trailer towing a D6 Cat bulldozer, turned too tight and it ripped out the asphalt turning from a drive way to a highway. They're probably still looking for me. Andrew Lyons with Transwest invented a way to let the air out of the 3rd axle so the tires on that axle would just glide-slide across the asphalt instead of dragging and side wall twisting.
