This video is part of the ‘One Hundred Billion Sparks’ project.
Music and concept by Max Cooper, video by Lauren Pedrosa
Max: “We live in a world of intense advertising, giving us our special consumerist value system, obsessing about the latest phones, clothes, cars, holidays, restaurants and brands. It's all a bit dark and engulfing, hence this monstrosity of a music video!
The rest of the One Hundred Billion Sparks album is fairly positive throughout, reflecting the good time I had during my isolation month working on the starting ideas. But while I was there I hurt my back and couldn't walk for a few days, which was a big challenge in total isolation. I was getting pissed off not being able to work properly and starting to think about some darker sides to the project ideas, when this one seemed to click. It was an angry vent with my Moog sub37, which is especially well suited to big aggressive modulated sounds. Actually I never meant for it to go onto the album, it was purely a moment where I needed to express myself. But after some time I realised this was as valid a piece of content as any, so I snuck it on there near the end where it hopefully does put too many people off ever listening to the album again.
I chatted to the great video artist Lauren Pedrosa about the the ideas, and she said she had some old electronics devices which could fit the concept here. I wasn't expecting her to create such visual intensity with the whole thing, she nailed it on marrying the video to the audio I think. I also enjoyed seeing some of my childhood LCD games on there, which I spent far too many hours on. So yeah, big thanks Lauren, and I hope some of you are into this AV barrage!”

Lauren Pedrosa – directors statement:
“In a society where desire overshadows need and we are conditioned to crave items over experiences, how can we begin to break the cycle of acquisition centrality? This film explores our society’s relationship with the material world, through the manipulation of archival objects dating back to the 1940’s. As the film progresses, the images become further and further degraded, slipping into the disorder that is our current relationship with the material world; one of egotism, greed, and escapism - ultimately fuelled by the false belief that in order to be happy, we must acquire as much as possible.
