According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), Africa’s energy consumption is expected to increase by nearly 60% by 2040. While there have been significant investments in generation, the financing of transmission assets, which has typically been done out of public budgets, has lagged significantly. According to the AfDB, over $46BN in new transmission investments is required in Africa between 2018 – 2025, or over $6BN a year in order to “catch up” on the historical underinvestment, as well as meet demand while increasing renewable resources, grid reliability requirements, digitization.
This session will answer the following questions :
How will cross-border links and regional power markets that will help unlock the electricity trade potential on the continent?
- What is required for IPT financing models to be widely implemented in Africa?
- What are the lessons that can be learned from the highly successful rollout of private sector led financing of the transmission sector in India and Latin America?
- What are the relevant regulatory and market structure precursors that are required to make independent private transmission projects bankable?
- With renewable energy playing a bigger role in the continent’s generation mix, how can African utilities prepare their grids to meet these new challenges while maintaining grid resiliency and security?
- How can we ensure that new energy transmission projects in Africa be designed and built with long-term sustainability, replicability and environmental considerations in mind?
