This past weekend, I went on a 1,300 mile roadtrip to attend the Ohio Pawpaw Conference. This is my second year attending and it was a joy to be in the company of other pawpaw enthusiasts once again.
The morning kicked off with a talk given by Sara Bir, author of The Pawpaw Cookbook. This was then followed by a discussion on pawpaw cultivars with a panel of pawpaw luminaries, including the famous Neal Peterson. Another panel addressed the topics of pawpaw production and marketing. It was great to hear about others’ experiences growing and spreading the love of pawpaws.
In the afternoon we went to nearby West View Pawpaw Farm, a 30 acre farm with 450 pawpaw trees. We toured the pawpaw orchard and then learned about hand pollination of pawpaws. Before leaving the farm, we got to see pawpaw grafting demonstrations performed by Cliff England of @kynuttrees.
The conference ended with an awards presentation recognizing individuals for their contributions to helping foster a renewed interest in this amazing but nearly forgotten fruit.
