A new cyclone –Vardah- is brewing over the Bay of Bengal, which would likely lead to heavy rainfall in the coastal regions of Andhra and Tamil Nadu.
The depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a deep depression by Thursday and into a cyclonic storm by Friday, according to the Met Department.
It lies about 1,180 km southeast of Visakhapatnam and 310 km southwest of Port Blair and has remained still since Wednesday morning.
Cyclone Vardah, which means Rose in Arabic and Urdu, was named by Pakistan.
S.Balachandran, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said Vardah is still far away and is being monitored.
“It is premature to reveal details on landfall and the volume of rainfall that it would bring. We will wait till the weather system intensifies into a cyclonic storm,” he said.
Last week, Chennai and coastal areas of Tamil Nadu was on alert for cyclone Nada. But it turned out to be a damp squib.
This is the first time that three cyclones have formed over Bay of Bengal.
