Hey it’s Raj from 3CB.
Juventus starlet Federico Chiesa injured his left knee vs Roma (a thrilling 4-3 win) and was subbed off.
Based on the mechanism of injury (how it happened) with his knee dropping inwards as he turns up the pitch and this noticeable ripple which could indicate the moment the ligament ruptures and the tibia (shin bone) and femur (thigh bone) slipping out of position and then back into place, this is most concerning for damage to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL).
There’s also potential for damage to the medial collateral ligament (MCL) and meniscus.
In the case of an ACL injury, the timeline depends on severity - a grade 1 tear comes with a 1-2 month timeline, a grade 2 tear with the knee not having any instability is 3-5 months, and a grade 2 tear with signs of knee instability or grade 3 full rupture (both of which require surgery) comes with a 7-9 month return timeline and even longer return to performance due to physical and mental deficits upon returning.
Examination is still ongoing and imaging will be done to confirm/deny. Thus far, all we know is that Chiesa has knee ligament damage and it’s feared to be the ACL. I’ll keep you updated as we learn more.
