Peter Greste has sent a letter from Egypt's Tora prison to thank those who are campaigning against his imprisonment.
"We are deeply moved and strengthened by the outpouring of support, but we also understand that this isn't just about the three of us," Greste wrote, also referring to his Al Jazeera colleagues, Mohammed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed.
"Our case has become emblematic of the freedom of the press worldwide," Greste wrote. "If by arresting us the government sought to send a message to journalists, both foreign and local working here, then the campaign for our release has sent an unequivocal response."
"We're confident that in time, and hopefully soon, all three of us will be acquitted and released," Greste added.
Greste, Fahmy and Mohamed have been detained in Egypt for 125 days.
They stand accused of falsifying news and their trial is set to resume on Saturday, which is also International Press Freedom Day.
Al Jazeera denies all of the charges against its journalists.
