(1 Dec 2021) The Jewish community of Madrid gathered on a central square of the Spanish capital on Wednesday to mark the fourth night of Hannukah.
Mayor Jose Luis Martinez Almeida attended the celebration.
The festival of Hanukkah, celebrated by Jewish people the world over, lasts for eight days, with a new candle being added to the menorah every night.
The general director of the Sefarad Israel centre in Madrid, Miguel de Lucas, said the public celebration was "important for the Jewish community of Madrid and it is important for the entire city."
"It is important that the Spanish people know us (Jewish people) more. It is a very important party and making it known and sharing it has a lot of value," said local real estate agent Alex Bendayan.
The eight-day Festival of Lights symbolises the triumph of light over darkness and of democracy over tyranny.
This year the festival is being celebrated between November 28 and December 6.
