You can follow along as I paint a small watercolor of a monarch butterfly. I explain all the materials, paint colors and tools I use and describe each step of the process. Some parts are real-time and some are time-lapse to keep the video length manageable. (The total time for me to complete this little painting was about 6 hours... I work very slowly, but you are welcome to finish it faster!)
Materials and supplies:
8x8-inch Arches 300-lb. hot-pressed paper (masked down to a 4x4-inch painting area)
Winsor & Newton watercolor tubes in the following colors:
Winsor Blue (green shade), equivalent to Phthalo Blue
Winsor Yellow, equivalent to sennelier yellow light or azo yellow light
Quinacridone Magenta
Payne's Gray
Daniel Smith watercolor tube: Lunar Black
IPG drafting tape (1/2-inch and 3/4-inch)
Enamel butcher tray (as palette)
Brushes:
Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolor round size 0
Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolor round size 1
Winsor & Newton Series 7 watercolor round size 00
Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolor 1-inch flat
Daniel Smith Series 2204 watercolor round size 14
Notes on brushes: The W&N Cotman brushes are student-grade, but I think they work fine in the smaller sizes (0 - 1). The Cotman 1-inch flat is not great -- splurge for a better flat if you can. And I don't think Daniel Smith makes brushes any more, but this one is a decent student-grade brush that mixes natural and synthetic hairs. It's helpful to have at least one large round brush -- a cheaper one like this is fine if you're on a budget.
