At least five people were shot dead while treating the wounded, the Kenya Medical Association and other groups said in a joint statement. Police fired live ammunition at the anti-tax demonstrators in the capital Nairobi as protests spread across the country.
The crowd overpowered the anti-riot police and set a section of the Parliament building on fire after storming the compound. The protesters also uprooted the national flag within Parliament premises as a stampede broke out inside the building, reports The Star. The Kenya Human Rights Commission shared a video of officers shooting at protesters and said they would be held to account.
