Tewkesbury Abbey, Grove organ
Built in 1885 by Mitchell and Thynne (who only ever built four organs) for an exhibition in South Kensington. It was purchased by Revd Grove for £800 and donated to the Abbey in 1887. As it lacks casework it became very dirty, and was not played regularly. It was cleaned and overhauled in 1905, but remained unaltered until work on the Milton Organ around 1950.
Sadly relations between Carlton Mitchell and William Thynne declined and the company became bankrupt.
The organ was restored by Bishop and Son in 1980-81, costing some £25,000.
Four manuals plus pedal, with 35 speaking stops.
