Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Bang?
Last time we talked about the importance of creation to the gospel and God’s overall plan for the universe. This time we're discussing why Bible believers should not fear the Big Bang theory.
There are lot creation myths out there (including the evolutionary one), but most of them are fantastic and not at all scientific like the orderly account found in Genesis. A myth is not necessarily false, it is a traditional story of the early history of a people or phenomenon, typically involving supernatural beings or events. The creation event is, by definition, supernatural because it happened before the natural laws were established.
But is the Bible’s account of creation compatible with popular science narrative of the Big Bang? Scientists used to believe in the Steady-State theory: that the universe always was something like it is now. Having infinite time from a steady state universe was comforting to evolutionists who need a very, very long time to make something as unlikely as evolution seem possible.
What became known (mockingly at first) as the Big Bang theory was originally formalized by Belgian Catholic priest, mathematician, astronomer, and professor of physics Georges Lemaître to explain the findings of other scientists in 1910 that most spiral nebulae (which we now know are actually galaxies) were moving away from Earth. This came to be called systematic redshift, and the predominant Steady-State theory of the universe had no explanation for it.
Later that decade, Einstein’s theory of general relativity proved that the universe was either expanding or contracting, but could not be in a steady state.
The Big Bang means the universe must have had an origin, much like what the Bible describes. Numerous passages in the Bible tell us something strikingly similar: that God stretched out the heavens.
* Job 9:8, Psalm 104:2, Isaiah 40:22, Isaiah 42:5, Isaiah 44:24, Isaiah 45:12, Isaiah 48:13, Isaiah 51:13, Jeremiah 10:12, Jeremiah 51:15, Zechariah 12:1 (Thanks to Otis Graf for compiling this list. ofgraf@gmail.com). My favorite is:
The Lord wraps himself in light as with a garment; he stretches out the heavens like a tent. (Psalm 104:2 NIV)
The picture these verses present is that God created a lot of material and He spread it out like a person pitches a tent. God gave birth to the universe in compact form and then expanded it to the size He planned it to be. So when God created the universe, He stretched out space as well. When you carry a tent, it is all folded up small for travel. But when you erect it, you spread it out and enlarge it to its full shape. This is what God did when He caused the events we now think of as the Big Bang.
But there are many questions raised by this that science still cannot answer:
1. What caused the Big Bang to occur?
2. A thing cannot create itself, so what was the origin of the material for the Big Bang?
I believe that God created everything from a rapidly expanding white hole and spread out the stars and galaxies as He expanded space itself. His fingerprints left behind are the redshift and the cosmic microwave background. More about that later.
Why not create everything in the position it is now? Why spread it out over time as He did? To understand this, we must understand God’s purpose in creating the universe and the heavens. And we’ll begin discussing that next time.
On the next video we'll answer this difficult question: If the Genesis account is true, how can we see distant starlight?
Help me get the word out that science and the Bible are not at odds and that God has an amazing plan for His universe and for each person in it!
