2014 Lamborghini Aventador Roadster:
The Aventador is the ultimate poster car and It’s the definition of dream car in every respect. It looks gorgeous and terrifying at the same time. In fact lamborghinis chief designer Filippo Perini actually took inspiration from the B-2 Bomber and F-22 raptor in designing this flagship v12 supercar.
The aventador evokes powerful emotions within me. After being blessed with the opportunity of riding in the coupe variant nearly three years ago its been my dream to own one of these ever since. In fact if I won the powerball lottery today there’s no question i'd have one of these tomorrow. And here’s why.
The aventador shattered the standards for the supercar. Mid engined, an enormous motor and stunning looks are the basics for entry. But Lamborghini turned everything up to 11, and the engine up to 12. Every component of the italian bull is a masterpiece, so lets start at its heart.
Directly behind me is a 6.5L naturally aspirated v12. Decorated in carbon, onlookers can peer through the rear glass at beast that lies beneath. The numbers are staggering. 691hp and 509 lb ft of torque. This means 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. Absolutely INSANE. The numbers are not comprehensible until you experience them. Let me tell you there are two better things than accelerating in an Aventador. One is accelerating in a Veyron Supersport, and the other is to PG-13 for this review.
Its the power delivery that is what makes the Aventador so brutal. In effort to save weight, Lamborghini ditched the idea of a dual clutch system in favor of a single clutch ISR automated manual transmission. Shifts happen in a blistering 50 millisecons (compared to a formula 1 cars 40 milliseconds). What these shifts do you your body it utterly ridiculous.
Place the car in corsa mode and the suspension firms, the steering tightens and the paddles become the trigger of a professional kickboxer poised to strike you firmly in the back. I love the transmission. It provides the instantaneous gratification with blistering upshifts and downshifts with a twist. Its not smooth, and that’s the best part.
I’ve spent a lot of time with porsche's PDK system, and while its one of the best transmissions in the business it’s too smooth. Same with the veyron.
Accelerating in those two cars feels like jumping out of an airplane. You accelerate unerupted wildly fast. With the Veyron you simply do not feel the shifts. And to me thats not fun. The Aventador upshifts so brutally it honest to god feels as fast as the first gen veyron. Driving an aventador is like eating a habanero. It hurts like shit but its a good hurt.
The sound. The Aventador produces the most glorious noise of any v12 on the market. It’s unique. It bellows at low rpms and schrieks at its 8500 rpm redline. It’s not as peircing as the 670sv or the zonda. But its music to my ears. And this being a roadster, I honestly do not think i'd ever use the radio. Except maybe to play Kayne’s Mercy. Whens the aventador version being released? (sound clips)
The exterior of the aventador is absurd. It’s angular, muscular, cut and styled beautifully in all the right ways. It sports one of the most attractive side profiles and rear views of any automobile ever created. It is the definition of exotic. Drive it down the road and people scream expletives and random babbling noises as their brains cannot even comprehend what they are seeing. Yes right now I am driving a fighter plane on the ground. And in matte black with purr wheels its more sinister looking than the grim reaper.
There are downsides to owning an aventador. The visibility is pathetic. The car is wide so parking and maneuvering in tight spots is terrifying at best.
Because the doors are magnificent. A piece of art and a reminder that this car doesn’t give a damn about the nurburgring. The aventador stirs my soul beyond belief. In the days leading up to this review I could hardly even sleep. This car is so powerful it disrupted my entire week thinking about the possibility of driving it. Its magical. I want nothing more than to be transported to monaco right now in this aventador roadster and drive up the coast to cannes. For the auto obsessed life really doesn’t get much better than driving an Aventador.
