How to make a long splice with long tapered transitions. We launch full size gliders with 5mm diameter UHMWPE rope attached to winch on a 3 foot drum. The rope is pulled in at about 60-80 mph, with tension over 1000 lbs for 2-seat gliders. We get rope break sometimes due to snarls at the drum, but also at other places in the line, and sometimes next to splices that cause stress in the rope. Since it's 6000 ft of rope, we need to splice it until we truly wear it out. In this video I replace a splice with a new one with longer tapers. I'm at Nephi Utah airport on the dirt strip.
