This knot is knot number 545 in The Ashley Book of Knots (ABoK). It is based on a four bight three lead Turks head knot made into a spherical form and can be tied in hand. It is also referred to as a Celtic button knot or a single strand diamond knot. According to Ashley they were found on Chinese lantern cords and as decorative knot ends on dress and hat trimmings.
Uses: As a decorative terminal knot. As a functional ornamental button.
