England's World Cup qualification hopes are dealt a shattering blow as they lose 2-0 away to Holland in October 1993. In what is effectively a winner takes all clash, Graham Taylor is left furious with the referee over his failure to send off Ronald Koeman for hauling down a goalbound David Platt - Koeman going on to put the Dutch ahead before Dennis Bergkamp settles it. Earlier Holland's Frank Rijkaard had controversially had a goal ruled out for offside. England's only hope of qualifying would now be if the Dutch lost away to Poland and they thrashed San Marino in the final game.
(Properly watching this match for the first time in over 20 years, I'd forgotten just how open this game actually was given so much was at stake. England carved out several decent opportunities and the Dutch, with flying wingers Overmars and Roy, always looked dangerous going forward - that save in the second half by David Seaman to deny Rijkaard from point blank range was tremendous but ultimately long since forgotten due to the result).
