We do not have to by bystanders, watching our ecosystems struggle and suffer alone. Change is possible — if we’re willing to make the tough choices necessary to help our ecosystems heal and to move into a better future. Using the cutting of trees, I have transformed this area of forest from hopeless to hopeful, lost to lush, bleak to beautiful in just a few years. Where once I saw this forest — and most areas of forest at Bear Island — as symbols of everything that was wrong with the world, now I see it as a symbol of hope.
