Big toe strength and how we breathe. These are two (and there are many more) major components of gait. We assess both to see how you’re pushing off the ground and how you are controlling your movement. The key is efficiency!! And your breath is one of the biggest drivers. We look at breathing patterns and identify compensations to see how much proximal stability you have- because if we lack sufficient core strength you can pretty much pick anywhere down the chain - hip, knee, ankle- that’s going to have some dysfunction over time. The big toe- well it’s pretty much one of the most important parts of the body- did you know your big toe strength should be 10% of your body weight!?!? - we have yet to measure someone who’s even close to that 😳 (we can blame over cushioned and restricted narrow toe box shoes for that). Lack of big toe strength is one of the biggest predictors of falls in seniors.
