STORYLINE:
More than a week after the Israeli military withdrew from Khan Younis, Palestinians returned to Gaza’s second largest city to search for their dead who were buried in a makeshift cemetery close to the main hospital in the city.
They unearthed graves where their dead were believed to be buried during Israel's months-long military invasion of the city.
Some found the bodies of their dead, but others didn’t.
Israel’s military said earlier this month it had withdrawn its forces from Khan Younis, wrapping up a key phase in its ground offensive against the Hamas militant group.
Israel sent troops into Khan Younis in December, part of its blistering ground offensive that came in response to Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack.
