(6 Sep 2019) Zimbabwean opposition leader Nelson Chamisa said on Friday that the death of former president Robert Mugabe on foreign soil is a "sad indictment" of the country's economic situation and that it erodes all of the pride Zimbabwe has as a country.
The former leader of Zimbabwe died age 95 at the Gleneagles Hospital in the wealthy Southeast Asian city-state of Singapore, where he had been receiving treatment in recent years.
"He was supposed to be in our country, getting treatment here, or at least on African soil," said Chamisa.
He said it speaks as a reminder of the need to invest in a new Africa.
Mugabe was forced to resign in 2017 after a 37-year rule whose early promise was eroded by economic turmoil, disputed elections and human rights violations.
Recounting his memories of the former leader, Chamisa spoke of Mugabe as a "victim of his rule."
