Polynyas: Polar Physics Revealed through Visualization of the E3SM GlobalClimate Model
Abstract:
Polynyas are openings amidst the polar winter sea ice formed and sustained by atmospheric and oceanic processes. They occur in theArctic ocean and the Southern ocean, lasting for many months, acting as a conduit for heat and water at the air-sea interface. Realistic coastal and open ocean polynyas in global climate models are a stringent test of the model’s physical fidelity, as their formation depends on complex interactions between the sea ice, ocean, and atmosphere. We highlight the role of polynyas in modulating earth’s mesoscale motions using high-resolution simulations from the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM). The animations were created as a collaborative project between climate modelers, computer scientists and an artist. The overlay of variables, dense in time and space, provided climate scientists with new insights into their simulations, including the dynamics of convective plumes driven by cold melt water at the ice edge.
