(27 Feb 2014) The Ukrainian ambassador to NATO said in Brussels on Thursday that the armed group occupying the Crimean Parliament building have identified themselves as Russian activists.
Tensions remained high in the Crimea region on Thursday after dozens of heavily armed pro-Russian gunmen seized control of local government buildings in its regional capital.
During a news conference Ihor Dolhov also said that Russia should respect international law and not interfere in Ukraine's internal political developments.
"Ukraine is a sovereign state, and it is a member of, and a signatory to, most international organisations. We respect our international obligations and we also expect our partners to fulfil their obligations," he said.
The autonomous region of Crimea has become a flashpoint in the east-west divide that threatens to rip Ukraine apart.
Seven armoured personnel carriers (APCs) were seen on Thursday in Crimea, according to a local Ukrainian reporter.
The APCs were parked near the village of Ukromnoye, two kilometres (over a mile) from Simferopol airport and about 10 kilometres (6 miles) from the city of Simferopol, the regional capital.
"Yes, it was noticed, we identified movement of some armoured vehicles belonging to the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation," said Dolhov.
The military vehicles were seen on the same day that Russia sent fighter jets to patrol its border with Ukraine and announced measures to tighten security at the headquarters of its Black Sea Fleet on the Crimean peninsula.
