Got the land of the new Nukeproof Giga 275 Comp for a week thanks to the guys at Chain Reaction Cycles Belfast store.
Had a lot of mixed opinions about this bike when I first heard about it and thought it was going to be something that's not really needed unless you live in the south of France. However I couldn't of been more wrong!
Throwing the leg over this bike for the first time I noticed straight away the upright position it puts you in thanks to the steep seat tube angle. This bikes the bike feel really comfortable to cycle therefore making climbing on a 180mm travel bike actually pretty easy. It's more comfortable to climb on than my Reactor to be honest with you however you do notice the extra bit of weight. I weighed this bike which is a Large at 16.43KG, I've researched other bikes in the class (Super Enduro) and this seems just about average for a Large.
Going uphill on this as mentioned is comfortable but the extra weight compared to the Reactor I'm used to means its still no easy task, however for a bike with the capabilities when pointed down Nukeproof have done an amazing job. Who would of thought 10 years ago that cycling comfortably uphill on a 180mm bike would of been a thing?
As you seen in my video my trails are very tame, I've enjoyed taking my hardtails down them however I find this still important because most of the time this is where I ride, so having fun on the Giga on these trails is massively important to me if I was to buy 1.
The Giga is smooth, over the small bumps such a roots, rocks etc, it soaks it up really well, you notice in the video I shout out sometimes as to how smooth the bike makes the trail. This meaning your contact time with tyres on ground is maximised which therefore means more grip, more grip then means faster speeds. I didn't want to try give my all on any for the trails in the fear of something going wrong on a bike that's not mine, but I do feel like I could go much faster than I could on my Reactor down these local trails of mine. I noticed its easier on the legs at the end, I feel this is my biggest weakness in fitness, my quads screaming at the end of a trail however on this thing I was good to keep going if there was more trail.
Towards the end of the video I take the bike over to my favourite side of the forest at Ballycastle even after my accent back in summer 2019. The Giga came alive here, I felt much more confident hitting the drops and jumps, more so that I didn't touch the brakes at all and felt I could go much bigger if I really went for it. The drops and jumps here for me are about average sized, biggest drop here is about 5ft so very small for some watching this, however for others its quite big.
The slack headtube angle keeps the confidence up when the trail gets steep, as you can see I was going down which is a quite steep trail but it suffers from the GoPro effect I was able to descend and still keep giving feedback on the trail and the bike. Usually I would be a bit more focused on keeping my weight over the back wheel but this generally made it a good bit more comfortable on the steep stuff.
Overall I think this bike is great, it climbs very comfortably but always remember its a 180mm travel bike so the bike is going to be a little heavier than your normal Enduro bike this means then you will get fitter faster haha In all honestly it does climb really well and its quite remarkable. On the single track it soaks up all the small bumps very well however, I would love to see how the model up performs with the fox spec as you will be able to adjust the compression front and rear where as with the comp you cant. I suspect the small bump sensitivity will be out of this world! Finally descending on this rig fills you with confidence to push that little harder and go that little bit bigger.
Biggest down side of this bike is that it doesn't fit on my £300 roof rack i recently bought in August 2020. Can always just put it in the back of the car instead.
If you are looking a bike purely for the enjoyment of downhills which is comfortable on the climbs this would be well worth your money. I don't like saying bikes climbs well cause any bike can climb if you have fitness, how well it climbs is down to you the person, however this is the most comfortable bike to climb on that I've been on. If your budget is a bit higher I'd highly recommend going for the Elite model of this bike.
Hope you liked my review of this bike, huge thanks again to CRC Boucher road store in Belfast for allowing me to borrow this. Go check them out if your ever close by, their address can be found below. Thanks for watching, hit like and subscribe if you enjoyed.
