Discipline Is EVERYTHING For Creatives. Art inspiration and motivation are overrated. As a creative, you need discipline. It's okay if you quit for 2 months, or 2 years, but get back on the creative path and KEEP GOING! If you do something enough times, over an extended period of time you WILL get better.
This video is a bit of a rant, but I wanted to share my thoughts on motivation and inspiration for creatives. We all are guilty from time to time for relying too much on motivation and inspiration for our creative process. The truth is, those are fleeting. The best way to grow an artist business, or become a better artist is to rely on discipline, patience, and consistency. It takes TIME to build an art business, a creative practice, a social media following, etc.
Regardless if you're simply interested in art, (or something else creative) and you have a growing creative side hustle, or are a full time working artist, you likely struggle with creative blocks. Having these creative blocks are completely normal, and part of any creative process.
The key is to keep going. Keep painting, keep filming, keep working! If you wait for the inspiration or the motivation to make better or more art, you're missing out.
Being able to convert motivation and inspiration into discipline is so critical in elevating yourself as a creative. There is no short cut for doing the work. Showing up to the studio and getting it done. Showing up to the gym and working out. Regardless if you feel compelled to create or not.
Emotions come and go for everyone. Being able to recognize that pattern, and push through the creative blocks and KEEP GOING are what separate the goods from the greats. If you do something enough times, over an extended period of time you WILL get better. You will develop a strong discipline to your creative process, and therefore your work. Take 2 years off? Don't beat yourself up... get back on the horse and keep creating!
It's not about how often you stop, but how often you begin again.
The world needs more creatives now more than ever. If you're reading this, keep going. Your art is good enough, and you should share it with the world.
Hopefully this rant makes sense? Leave some love in the comments section below for fellow creatives.
With gratitude,
Ginny
