SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — Utah House speaker Mike Schultz said the USU women’s volleyball move to not participate in a match against a team with a transgender player began with people close to USU teammates.
“There were people on behalf of the players who reached out to us first,” Schultz said. “There have been several people talking to the university president, including myself and Rep. Kera Birkeland.”
Birkeland led efforts in Utah law to prevent trans athletes from playing in girls’ sports, a measure vetoed by Gov. Spencer Cox but overridden by the Legislature.
