Experiencing War: A Project to Preserve and Make Accessible Oral Histories of World War II
Nick Pavlik and Michelle Sweetser, Bowling Green State University.
This presentation will provide an overview of a large scale oral history digitization and access project recently completed by the Center for Archival Collections at Bowling Green State University Libraries. With support from the Ohio History Fund, the project, entitled “Experiencing War: A Project to Preserve and Make Accessible Oral Histories of World War II,” resulted in the digitization of 108 World War II veteran oral histories contained on a variety of audio and video media formats, as well as the launch of a digital exhibit providing full online access to the oral histories. This presentation will outline the many phases of the project--including assessing the content and condition of the original recordings, researching and applying to funding sources, selecting and outsourcing to digitization and transcription vendors, creating metadata, and publishing a digital exhibit--and will detail the standards, practices, and workflows implemented throughout, along with the lessons learned.
