No doubt that sport climbing in Ith in Northern Germany is great. Here you will be rock climbing overhangs and pockets on limestone rock. But is it the BEST sport climbing area in Central Europe? Watch the video and find out!
Ith is both sport climbing and traditional climbing. The area features crags that are usually lesser bolted meaning that they are more mixed trad climbing than actual sport climbing. There are also crags, like Holzener Klippen and Marienauer, that are pretty well-bolted.
The area however, is notoriously known for sparse bolting. I actually talked with a local who once said that the bolting paradigm in the Ith area is that the harder sequences of each route is bolted, while it is expected that you bring your own protection for the rest - whether that is true one can only guess. I usually bring some nuts and a set a cams, when climbing in Ith.
I would suggest that if you want to learn traditional climbing, Ith is actually a good place to start. There are several crack sport climbing routes with just a couple of bolts meaning that you have to place your own protection such as cams or nuts.
The biggest crag in Ith is Lüerdisser that features several really nice sectors. We also went sport climbing at Mariennauer, Zirkus and Holzener Klippen, which you can see in this rock climbing vlog episode.
Would this be the best sport climbing area in Central Europe? It is definitely one of my favourite areas! In this rock climbing vlog episoide you will see us climbing 6b and climbing 7a sport climbing routes around the crags mentioned above.
