Hi everyone,
In this video I go over how to optimize positioning when trying to fall asleep after a rib fracture.
The first position is trying to stack 3-4 pillows at the top of the bed in order to elevate the head of the bed.
This will allow you to sleep more upright.
Of course, some individuals may not be able to fall asleep in this position.
However, if you are able to, this position can make it not only easier to get in and out of bed, but also improve your overall lung health and decrease the risk of a pneumonia.
This is especially the case if you're not doing your exercises and trying to move around if your pain is not well controlled or you haven't watched some of my previous videos on the importance of this!
Of course, if you have a bed that has the option to put you in a recliner position electronically, then this would work well as well.
In addition, having pillows around your thorax region to help with comfort and splinting for your exercises and coughing is important.
Finally, if you have a recliner chair, this can be even more beneficial for sleep as you have less resistance to overcome in order to transition from a sitting to standing movement and may help improve your sleep as well.
Sleep is super important for rib fracture (and any injury and overall health). Trying to aim for 7-9 hours would be a reasonable goal. This can help with pain and optimize your recovery.
